JV REUNION? Justin Verlander says “fate” will decide whether he returns to the Detroit Tigers before his retirement

Game Notes: The Detroit Tigers have lost three straight series. Before that they had won four series in a row. As of Monday, they are exactly .500 at 20-20. Through 40 games, the Tigers have been the epitome of average, and in a division that has been much better than many expected, they will need to be a lot better in the last 122 games. Okay, you know what, there’s still a lot of baseball to be played, but the point still stands!

As the Tigers look to start the game strong after the 40, they will do so with an adjusted pitching rotation (at least for now). Kenta Maeda would normally have been thrust into the starting role on Monday, but he was placed on the 15-day injured list due to an illness and will be out for at least the next two starts (and possibly longer, as manager AJ Hinch said Maeda will have to start rehab in Toledo). Enter Matt Manning, the sixth honorary member of the Tigers rotation since the start of the season.

Manning was expected to make the team as one of the starting five pitchers for most of the offseason, but this turned out to be a surprise near the end of spring training. Despite that, he has already made three starts for the Tigers, all as extra call-ups for doubleheader games.

In his first start this year, Manning was out. He didn’t allow a single hit through 5⅔ innings and was able to use about four walks to hold the New York Mets scoreless, but he didn’t get the win after the Tigers’ bullpen gave up two runs in the ninth inning for the loss. In both of his other two starts this year, Manning has given up four runs with three combined home runs, which is disheartening for Manning because the home runs he gave up in spring training were one of the reasons the Tigers gave for starting him. Triple-A Toledo.

Manning has also made three starts in four games for Toledo this year, posting a 3.79 ERA over 19 innings with two home runs allowed.

The good news for Manning is that the jump won’t be too big when he faces Miami on Monday, as the Marlins are just 11-31 (worst in baseball) and are essentially a glorified Triple-A team after losing Luis Arraez have been traded to the San Diego Padres (we’re kidding, we’re kidding… but not really).

After Monday’s game, the Tigers will play the Marlins twice more, starting with Reese Olson on the mound Tuesday and Casey Mize for the Tigers on Wednesday.
